Online English for Work course

Do you struggle to perform confidently and effectively in English in work situations? The online English for Work course is aimed at people who need to use English in work contexts and want to get better at doing so.

What is the online English for Work course?

The course is divided into 9 different independent modules. You can decide to study just one or up to nine modules at a B1 or a B2 level on the Common European Framework. You can choose to study the self-study version of the business English course (Essential version) or, if you also want to practise with a tutor, you can sign up for the Premium version.

What B1 English for Work modules are available?

Pick and choose from this list of practical business English modules to help you perform better and more confidently in English in the workplace at a B1 level.

  • Meetings (B1). Learn how to schedule, manage and participate in meetings, and how to make a report about a meeting. In this module you will learn how to schedule, manage and participate in meetings effectively in English at a B1 level. You will also learn how to make a report about a meeting in English.
  • Presenting your Work (B1). Learn how to describe what your company or organisation does and give a guided tour of your workplace. In this module you will learn how to describe what your company or organisation does in English and give a guided tour of your workplace.
  • Dealing with the Public (B1). Improve your English language skills in a variety of situations when dealing with the public. In this module you will develop essential language needed to communicate effectively in different situations when dealing with the public in English.

  • Telephoning (B1). Learn essential language and practise making and receiving telephone calls at work. In this module you will improve your confidence and accuracy when using essential language required for making and receiving telephone calls in English at work.
  • Banking and Finance (B1). Learn essential language used in banking and the world of finance. In this module you will learn and practise essential language in English used in banking and the world of finance.
  • Negotiating and Selling (B1). Practise useful language for advertising and selling. In this module you will develop and apply useful language used in English in the world of advertising and selling.
  • Travelling (B1). Learn essential language you need to use when you travel on business. In this module you will learn and practise essential language in English you need to use when you travel on business.
  • Applying for a Job (B1). Learn and practise essential language used in the different stages of applying for a job. In this module you will learn and practise essential language used in the different stages of applying for a job in English.

What B2 English for Work modules are available?

Communicating in English confidently and effectively at a B2 level in a work context can have a very positive impact on international relations. Pick and choose from this list of practical modules at a B2 level.

  • Meetings (B2). Improve your ability to follow, participate in, and manage different types of meetings. In this module you will improve your ability to follow, participate in, and manage different types of meetings confidently in English.
  • Making Presentations (B2). Learn useful language and strategies, and practise essential skills for presenting products, services and organisations. In this module you will develop and practise useful language and strategies for presenting products, services and organisations in English.
  • Dealing with the Public (B2). Improve your English language skills in a variety of situations when dealing with the public. In this module you will improve your ability to communicate effectively and respectfully in English in a variety of situations when dealing with the public.
  • Writing (B2). Improve your writing skills in English by studying different writing conventions, text types and features of written language. In this module you will improve your writing skills in English by studying and practising different writing conventions, text types and features of written language.

How do you improve your English and ability to communicate in these work-related contexts?

Each English for Work module is divided into 6 sections, and each section focuses on a particular aspect of communicating effectively in English in relation to the topic of the module e.g. how to give information effectively (Dealing with the Public module). Useful language is presented and contextualised in relevant situations. It is then built on and practised with a series of interactive exercises. This structure efficiently equips you with the tools to then apply this language to your needs and context. As a result, you will communicate more effectively and with more confidence in English at work.

If you sign up for a Premium version of the course, we will assign you a tutor and in addition to the interactive exercises, you can practise using the language with your tutor in writing and /or speaking tutorials.

How many tutorials are included in the Premium modules?

The number of writing and speaking tutorials included in each Premium module are listed when you sign up. If you want to do more speaking tutorials, you can add extra speaking tutorials to your subscription when you sign up for the course.

What levels can you study?

You can study English for Work modules at a B1, Lower Intermediate, or B2, Upper Intermediate, level.

What is the difference between the Essential and the Premium versions of the course?

The Essential version of the course is a self-study version. You will have access to the module(s) you select and all the tools and resources on the platform but without tutor support.

The Premium version of the course is the self-study version with tutor support for the speaking and/or writing tutorials. You will be assigned your own personal English tutor who will carry out speaking tutorials with you and send you feedback on the writing tutorials. The speaking tutorials are 25-minute conversations with your tutor. The days and times of the speaking tutorials are flexible. To book your speaking tutorial, you select a convenient day and time for you on the calendar on the platform.

How long will you have access to your course?

You will have access to 1 module for 2 months. If you sign up for 3 modules, you will have access to the 3 modules for 6 months etc.

Will you get a certificate?

Yes, on successful completion of the module, you can download your certificate from the platform. The certificate will include your name, the name of the module, the level, a breakdown of your marks, the date and the name of your tutor (if applicable).
